Aerial View of Atlanta's Railroad Center

This view shows Atlanta's railroad center in 1949. Terminal Station (bottom left) is highlighted in green and Union Station (upper right) in red. The long parallel structures leading from both stations are canopies over the loading platforms. At Terminal Station, the canopies replaced the huge train shed demolished in 1925.

The Spring Street viaduct cuts diagonally across the center of the image. Built in 1922-23, the million-dollar structure crossed over not only tracks and platforms but also several freight depots.

The street ramp shaped like a tuning fork and connecting to the viaduct is now a section of MLK Jr. Drive. Just below that is the former main post office, now a recently restored federal building. Just above it is the former Rich's department store with its four-level bridge over Forsyth Street. If they were standing today, the two huge Atlanta Gas Light storage tanks at the top left of the image would be adjacent to Philips Arena. Nearly all of the area shown to the left of Spring Street is now covered by parking lots.
