At one time, RailAmerica, Inc. of Boca Raton, Florida was the world's largest short line and regional railroad operator with 49 railroads and 12,800 route miles. In Georgia, RailAmerica briefly owned Georgia Southwestern Railroad which it acquired through its February 4, 2000, acquisition of RailTex, Inc. It sold the line to local investors in 2002.
